This is a member of the Flathead tribe,
part of the Confederated Salish-Kootenai
tribe of Northwestern Montana. A
Salishan-speaking group, they have a
very sophisticated alphabet and were the
first to invite the missionaries to their
tribal lands to gather some of the
Black-robes' "good medicine".

This warrior dates at circa 1830-45. The
neckpiece is deer-hide, stuffed with sage
and sweetgreass. It is then quilled and
beaded with a hanging ornament he has
found or sometimes deer dewclaws for a
clacking effect.
