Some study art, others practice it, and very few are given the gift of art. Born
in Great Falls, Montana, Mary Michael's’ ranching and traditional western
background exposed her to the splendor of living in the outdoors. Her
uncanny eye for proportion was discovered at an early age when she would
draw animals on any scrap of paper (or wall) that was handy.
After working at regular and varied jobs, raising her family, she realized her
art was always there, needing to be brought to its fullest. Taking workshops
from artists she admired, she found her true love in sculpting. and jumped in
full time as an artist.
For more than a decade now, Michael has been producing bronze sculptures
of increasing artistry and form. Following the ABCs’ of art; artistry, balance,
composition and design, her work is not only representational, it is fine art in
its’ truest form. She was commissioned to do not one, but two monuments of
Sacajawea for the Bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark journey. The realism
and softness of her portrayal of this historic woman has been remarked on
many times. Her bronzes have won top awards and she is being accepted into
more prestigious shows including Cowgirl Up! 2009 in Wickenburg, AZ.
In October of 2007, her bronze, “Take Me Home Baby” of a barrel racer, was
chosen by the Calgary Stampede Rodeo committee to be their trophy bronze
for the next five years at the Calgary Stampede, largest rodeo in Canada.
Mary is a member of the Western Heritage Artists, Northwest Artists, and
Associate member of Women Artists of the West and National Sculpture
Society.
She is currently working on portrait sculpture commissions, a new and
challenging venue; and with an interior designer, creating floor inlays for
trophy homes in Montana.
“My talent is a gift from God and he wouldn’t let me ignore it. I can’t take
credit for that; my job is to use it to its’ full capacity.”
